What justifies the rates of Professional Interior Designers? Well, Interior Designers possess a unique set of skills that goes beyond choosing paint colors and decorating. We are the Jennifer Lopez in Wedding Planner type of luxury service. There is no doubt we live in a visually driven world. Who looks at the pictures of a hotel before booking your stay? Who checks out the aesthetics of a restaurant before making a reservation? We can all appreciate beautiful designs, but we can’t, nor want to achieve it on our own. Whether you’re in the market for an Interior Designer or not, let’s talk about the value Interior Designers bring to any project.

Responsibilities of an Interior Designer

Just to name a few: finishes, color, fixtures, hardware, fabrics, furnishings, style, scale, layout, space planning, ergonomics, client lifestyle, traffic flow, timeline, budget, time management, organization, prioritization, problem solving, solution management, architectural details, drawings, patterns, renderings+

Interior Designers are really the jack of all trades (no pun intended). We are in charge of creating cohesive designs that fit within the timeline and budget of the client. We manage the project through to the end to alleviate any stress from the client.

*COHESIVE DESIGN:

What is Cohesive Design: Cohesive design is to create a space where all the design elements come together harmoniously, creating a visually pleasing and balanced environment. It ensures that the various components of the space work in harmony, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the interior.

The Value of Interior Designers:

1. Our Expertise:

Interior designers possess specialized skills and knowledge acquired through formal education and years of experience. We understand design principles, space planning, color schemes, materials, furniture selection, lighting, and other aspects that contribute to creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. Our expertise allows us to deliver high-quality results with our client’s style aspirations through to the end.

Not everyone has to love what they do to be good at their job. We become Interior Designers because of the passion we have for design and the inspiration we get from designing and executing a cohesive and beautiful design for our clients. Trust me, you don’t go into a creative field because you feel like it. You have to absolutely LOVE it because it is tons. of. work. People and styles are always changing, so it is a profession that constantly possesses new challenges. But, where there is a challenge, there is opportunity.

2. Project Management Skills:

Designing and executing an interior project involves extensive planning, research, sourcing materials, coordinating with contractors and suppliers, managing budgets, and overseeing the entire process. Designers invest significant time and effort in each project, ensuring that every detail aligns with the client’s vision and objectives. Our project management skills and industry knowledge save clients both time and effort, as we can navigate complex situations and address issues that may arise during the design process. It is our job to come up with solutions to any problem that may arise.

So, what takes up a designer time per project? Our list is never ending and seems to continue getting longer BUT, here is a brief overview of what we go through for each design project.

   1. Initial Consultation

   2. Concept Development

   3. Space Planning

   4. Material and Finishes Selection

   5. Furniture and Accessories

   6. Color Coordination

   7. Lighting Design

   8. Procurement and Project Management

   9. Communication and Collaboration

   10. Final Styling and Presentation

3. Exclusive Resources:

Interior designers have created their own vast network of suppliers, artisans, and contractors that can be invaluable for clients. This network allows us to source unique materials, furniture, and accessories that are not readily available to the general public. By working closely with these resources, interior designers can create one-of-a-kind spaces that reflect the clients’ individuality and elevate the overall design.

Remember the “High Point Furniture Market” post? The vendors we select to represent reflect the knowledge we have for our respected clients. We know the market and what vendors best suit our style, demographic and most importantly what WE know we can use in our designs to knock the socks off our clients. 🙂

4. Tailored Solutions:

Every project is unique, and interior designers excel at creating customized solutions tailored to the client’s needs, preferences, and lifestyle. Interior Designers have the ability to understand how spaces are best utilized. We meticulously analyze our client’s needs, lifestyle, and preferences to create layouts that maximize functionality while maintaining a harmonious flow and aesthetic preferences. Our attention to detail ensures that no element is overlooked, resulting in spaces that exude elegance and sophistication. This personalized approach ensures that the design reflects the client’s personality and enhances the overall living or working experience.

We start every project by asking questions. My least favorite question that is commonly asked is “What do you want”? We’re hired to uncover what you desire and didn’t know you needed but now can’t live without. My favorite question to ask is “how to do you want the room to feel”? When you go to the doctor’s office, they don’t ask you to self-diagnose yourself, but they will ask you for symptoms and how you feel. They can’t deliver you an analysis without gathering information, and neither can we.

5. Cost Saving Overall:

While hiring an interior designer involves an initial investment, our expertise can actually help save money in the long run. We can prevent costly mistakes by avoiding design errors, identifying cost-effective solutions, and optimizing the use of available resources. Additionally, a well-designed space can add value to the property, potentially resulting in a higher resale value.

The most common mistakes are room layouts, scale, height, color, and outlet placement. Many of these mistakes can be avoided by bringing a designer in at the beginning of a project. Our post Design Bakery explains the breakdown of the home design process in relation to baking a cake. Check her out!

6. Enhancement of Well-being:

A well-designed space can significantly impact an individual’s well-being. Interior designers consider factors such as lighting, acoustics, ergonomics, and overall ambiance to create environments that promote comfort, relaxation, and productivity all while maintaining the aesthetics desired by the client.

Ultimately, whether an interior designer’s fees are worth the expense depends on your specific needs, budget, and priorities. If you value professional guidance, a personalized design, and a seamless project execution, working with an interior designer can be a worthwhile investment.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure how to title this post. I believe wholeheartedly in the value any luxury service has. So, I asked google “blog title for value of interior design” and this is what it spit out: “The Value of Interior Designers: Enhancing Spaces and Enriching Lives”. WOAH! It seemed a bit presumptuous, but I do think there is something to be said from typing in “value of interior design” and this is what it came up with. We DEFINITELY enhance spaces, that’s obvious from all of the before/after’s we see on HGTV. Interior Design can be so special as it enriches lives. I think I’ve said this in just about every post I’ve written. I think this is the main reason to consider hiring an Interior Designer. We save you time, frustration but more importantly, we show you you can love where you live.

I hope this post shed some light on the value of hiring an Interior Designer. We don’t work for you, we work with you.
